With the emergence of the second Generation Street Artist, we see a revitalization of painting/ art in the public space. Following in the steps of the Grafitti artists (an art form born here in the Bronx), these artists take a guerilla style approach to make their work seen. Often engaging with a specific site, the meaning of their art and the location are interwoven- being stronger for the connection. Often showcasing rebellious flair and political commentary, the work enters into the conversation of art making, politics of public space, and image ownership. Below we will see some examples of contemporary artists painting / installing work in public spaces.

In the example below we see a precursor in the work "Portrait of the Bourgeoisie" by Siqueiros. While this work was not done outside as a great many of murals are, it was completed in the stairwell of the Electricians Union Building in Mexico City. In this mural we have a subject related to its specific site. We also have a work in a unique spatial setting forcing sight lines to be considered. It was composed with the thought of the viewers path up the stairway.

For our project I am asking you to locate a site that you are interested in working with. Scout out the location and take photos, both near and far (noting how the audience moves through the space.) Diagrams or sketches are also good ideas. The location must have a relationship to the "object" you will put there (supportive, critical, aesthetic, etc.) Y
